The corrosion resistance of 2205 duplex stainless steel plate is attributed to its carefully designed element ratio. The synergistic effect of various alloy elements enables the material to exhibit outstanding corrosion resistance in harsh environments such as those containing chloride ions and acidic media, far exceeding that of ordinary austenitic stainless steel.
The chromium (Cr) content is controlled within the range of 22.0% - 23.0%, which is the core element for forming a dense passivation film. Chromium forms a stable oxide film on the material surface, effectively preventing the corrosive medium from coming into contact with the substrate, laying the foundation for the corrosion resistance. A too low chromium content will weaken the passivation ability, while an excessively high content may affect the phase equilibrium.
The molybdenum (Mo) content is 3.0% - 3.5%, which is a key element for enhancing the resistance to pitting corrosion and crevice corrosion. In marine environments, salt water media, and chloride ion-containing conditions, the molybdenum element significantly increases the critical pitting temperature of the material, enabling 2205 duplex steel to have a higher resistance to local corrosion among similar materials.
The nickel (Ni) content ranges from 4.5% to 6.5%. Its main function is to stabilize the austenite structure and ensure that the two-phase ratio reaches a balanced state of approximately 50:50. Reasonable nickel content not only improves the toughness of the material but also enhances the stability of the passivation film and reduces the sensitivity to stress corrosion cracking.
The nitrogen (N) content is 0.14% - 0.20%. Although it is a trace addition, its effect is remarkable. The nitrogen element strengthens the austenite phase, increasing the yield strength while further improving the resistance to pitting corrosion. Its effect is approximately 30 times that of chromium.
It is precisely this scientific element ratio that enables 2205 duplex steel to perform exceptionally well in resisting chloride stress corrosion, pitting corrosion, and crevice corrosion, and is widely used in marine engineering, chemical equipment, and seawater desalination, among others.
