Yes, but there is a risk of bimetallic corrosion when welding between stainless steel and iron. Unprotected welding will be affected by the corrosive environment. Post-weld surface coating of carbon steel is usually required for corrosion protection and repair of stainless steel welded pipes.
1. Increase in welding costs. Welding dissimilar metals brings additional challenges to the process. This translates into increased labor, rejection/error rates and increased costs.
2. Hot cracks in stainless steel. Since it is more resistant to electricity than carbon steel, which is iron, stainless steel heats up much faster than carbon steel in resistance welding. While waiting for the carbon steel to reach welding temperature, the stainless steel will overheat and be filled with hot cracks. Using filler welding or preheating plain steel can improve the situation, but these methods are not perfect.
3. Thermal expansion under high temperature use conditions. Another problem with using dissimilar metals in welding wire form is that thermal expansion of heat affects each metal differently. This difference in expansion rates between the two metals can cause additional fatigue in the welded joint - reducing the structural integrity and service life of the wire.
4. Increased Bimetallic Corrosion One of the reasons you typically want to use stainless steel is because of its strong corrosion resistance. Unexposed plain and stainless steel welds exposed to extreme corrosive conditions, such as immersion in salt water, may cause corrosion. This is due to the mixing of regular steel particles with stainless steel alloys.
The problem of reducing welding strength and connecting dissimilar metals is dry. Even if the welding method of dry filler is used, the weld will become weaker. Differences in welding temperature and operating tolerances alone can easily compromise the strength of a welded joint.
