Seawater desalination is the process of converting seawater into fresh water, involving various techniques such as reverse osmosis, multi-effect flash evaporation, and multi-effect distillation. The equipment is in prolonged contact with high-salinity seawater and chlorine-containing media, resulting in an extremely harsh corrosive environment. The 2205 duplex stainless steel plate, with its unique performance advantages, has become the core material for the manufacturing of seawater desalination equipment.
The excellent resistance to chloride ion corrosion is the primary advantage of 2205 duplex steel. The concentration of chloride ions in seawater can reach over 20,000 ppm. Ordinary austenitic stainless steels such as 304 and 316L are prone to pitting corrosion and stress corrosion cracking during long-term operation. Due to the presence of 3.0% - 3.5% molybdenum and 0.14% - 0.20% nitrogen in 2205 duplex steel, its critical pitting corrosion temperature is much higher than that of 316L. It exhibits outstanding resistance to local corrosion in the presence of chloride ions, ensuring the long-term stable operation of equipment.
High-intensity thinning of wall thickness is another significant advantage. The yield strength of 2205 duplex steel reaches over 450 MPa, which is approximately twice that of 316L. In the design of high-pressure pipelines and pressure vessels for seawater desalination, thinner wall thicknesses can be used to reduce equipment weight and manufacturing costs. At the same time, the excellent plasticity and toughness of the material ensure the reliability of processing, forming, and welding.
The combined effect of erosion resistance and corrosion resistance enables 2205 duplex steel to perform exceptionally well in seawater transportation systems. The seawater intake pipes, filter housings, and pump body components of seawater desalination plants not only need to withstand seawater corrosion but also endure high-speed water flow erosion. The 2205 duplex steel has moderate hardness and uniform structure, possessing both corrosion resistance and erosion resistance, thereby extending the equipment maintenance cycle.
The welding performance is excellent, facilitating equipment manufacturing. When welding 2205 duplex steel, no preheating is required before welding, and no heat treatment is necessary after welding. Moreover, the weld structure is stable, and there is no problem of duplex imbalance in the heat affected zone. It is suitable for on-site installation and splicing of large-scale seawater desalination devices.
