The heat treatment process of 347 stainless steel tubes plays a decisive role in determining its final microstructure and corrosion resistance. Among them, the solution treatment is the most crucial heat treatment step, directly affecting the complete dissolution and uniform precipitation of niobium carbide, as well as the exertion of the material's intergranular corrosion resistance.
The solution treatment process involves heating 347 stainless steel tubes to a certain temperature and holding it for a period of time, followed by rapid cooling. The typical solution treatment temperature range is from 1040℃ to 1120℃. Within this temperature interval, niobium carbide and other precipitated phases are fully dissolved into the austenitic matrix, forming a uniform single-phase structure. The holding time is determined based on the wall thickness of the tube and is usually 1 to 2 minutes per millimeter of wall thickness to ensure uniform temperature penetration.
The cooling method is the key to the solution treatment. For 347 stainless steel tubes, water quenching or rapid air cooling is usually adopted for cooling. The purpose of rapid cooling is to prevent the precipitation of chromium carbides during the cooling process, maintain the uniform and dispersed distribution of niobium carbide, and thus ensure the intergranular corrosion resistance of the material.
In terms of execution standards, ASTM A312 and GB/T 14976 both have clear regulations for the solution treatment of 347 stainless steel tubes. The standards require that after the material undergoes solution treatment, it should obtain a single austenitic structure, with grain size controlled within the range of 5 to 8 levels, and without obvious reticular carbides or σ phases and other harmful phases. The treated materials need to undergo mechanical property and intergranular corrosion tests to verify the process effect.
It is worth noting that the 347 stainless steel tube contains the niobium stabilizing element, which enables it to maintain its intergranular corrosion resistance after welding without the need for a subsequent solution treatment. This is an important advantage that distinguishes it from 304 stainless steel.
