When ordinary austenitic stainless steel is used or welded within the sensitization temperature range of 450°C to 850°C, chromium at the grain boundaries will preferentially combine with carbon to form chromium carbides, which precipitate. This results in a chromium-depleted zone near the grain boundaries. When exposed to corrosive media, the depleted chromium area is more prone to corrosion, thereby causing intergranular corrosion.
The addition of niobium has altered this reaction pathway. The affinity of niobium for carbon is much stronger than that of chromium. At high temperatures, niobium will preferentially combine with carbon to form stable carbide niobium rather than chromium carbides. Carbide niobium is uniformly precipitated within the crystal, without consuming the chromium at the grain boundaries, thus effectively maintaining the chromium content at the grain boundaries and avoiding the formation of areas with low chromium content.
Therefore, after welding or when in service for a long time within the sensitization temperature range, the 347 stainless steel pipe can still maintain excellent intergranular corrosion resistance, and no post-welding solution treatment is required. This characteristic gives it an irreplaceable advantage in large-scale components such as chemical equipment, boiler superheaters, and high-temperature pipelines, where welding is extensive and heat treatment is impossible.
