In Namibia, a modern high-capacity cargo terminal has risen on newly reclaimed land at Whale Bay Port, significantly enhancing the region's international trade capabilities. The new terminal doubles local cargo handling capacity and transforms the port into a versatile hub for container and bulk cargo operations.

Strategically located along Namibia's central coastline, Whale Bay is integrated into major international shipping routes and serves as the country's largest commercial port. Annually, the port accommodates approximately 3,000 vessels, handling around 5 million tons of cargo. To meet growing demand, the Namibia Ports Authority initiated a major infrastructure upgrade, focusing on a newly constructed 30-hectare container terminal.
The terminal features a 600-meter new quay wall, enabling water depths of 16.5 meters and supporting simultaneous container, bulk, and general cargo operations. The $268 million project increases annual container throughput from 350,000 TEUs to 837,000 TEUs and reduces average container turnaround time from 14.5 days to 9.5 days.
Engineering Challenges and Steel Solutions
Whale Bay's mild climate and strategic location make it ideal for port construction, but the local environment posed severe corrosion challenges due to high salt spray, saline soil, and periodic hydrogen sulfide emissions. To build the terminal on reclaimed land, China Harbour Engineering Company dredged 3.9 million cubic meters of sand and rock, constructed the 600-meter quay wall, and laid 304,000 m² of paved surface.
To withstand harsh conditions, corrosion-resistant steel materials were employed. High-strength steel anchor piles were grouted and wrapped with high-density polyethylene coatings, while welded points were treated with additional anti-corrosion compounds. The steel anchors were driven at a 30-degree angle with two-meter spacing, combining strength, flexibility, and durability to ensure a stable quay foundation.
Furthermore, the port's four steel quay cranes received specialized corrosion protection coatings, safeguarding their operational reliability and longevity. These steel structures and materials are essential for ensuring that Whale Bay functions as a modern international trade hub, capable of handling both containerized and bulk cargo efficiently.
