Record-Breaking Design and Capacity
Developed by Belgium-based heavy lifting expert Sarens, the SGC-250 crane is a ring-based modular crane, the first of its third-generation series. Its 118-metre steel boom and 52.3-metre heavy-duty jib, built from high-strength steel, allow lifts of up to 100 metres in radius, handling massive prefabricated steel sections for large-scale construction projects like the Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant in the UK.
Innovative Modular Steel Construction
Big Carl reflects the trend of modular crane systems in construction. Prefabricated steel components are manufactured in controlled facilities and then transported to the site for assembly. The crane itself was shipped from Belgium to the UK in 280 truckloads and reassembled over 10 weeks. Its 52 steel counterweights, each weighing 100 tonnes, enhance stability for heavy lifting operations.
