The application of K500 in oil and gas drilling and extraction requires a clear understanding of its performance boundaries in acidic environments. In salt water or well completion fluids without hydrogen sulfide, K500 has good corrosion resistance and can be used for drill collars, instrument components, and downhole tool assemblies. However, in acidic environments containing hydrogen sulfide, the surface of K500 will rapidly undergo sulfuric acid film transformation, resulting in a loss of luster, and the overall service life is limited. Research by AMPP (formerly NACE) indicates that when the stress level is controlled according to the recommended guidelines (not exceeding 30–80% of the specified minimum yield strength), K500 has the ability to resist environmental-assisted cracking. However, its economic advantages are not prominent in acidic conditions. Material selection recommendation: For non-acidic oil and gas operations, the high strength and salt water resistance of K500 can be prioritized; for operations containing hydrogen sulfide, the service period should be carefully evaluated, or alternative materials should be considered.
